history meme. ten moments: the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton at Weehawken, New Jersey.
On the morning of July 11, 1804, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton were rowed across the Hudson River in separate boats to a secluded spot near Weehawken, New Jersey. There, in accord with the customs of the code duello, they exchanged pistol shots at ten paces. Hamilton was struck on his right side and died the following day. Though unhurt, Burr found that his reputation suffered an equally fatal wound. In this, the most famous duel in American history, both participants were casualties. […] they managed to make a dramatic final statement about the time of their time. Honor mattered because character mattered. And character mattered because the fate of the American experiment with republican government still required virtuous leaders to survive. Eventually, the United States might develop into a nation of laws and established institutions capable of surviving corrupt or incompetent public officials. But it was not there yet. It still required honorable and virtuous leaders to endure. Both Burr and Hamilton came to the interview because they wished to be regarded as part of such company. (The Founding Brothers, Joseph J. Ellis)

When a hero falls

It is his humanity

That will save us all

While [Burr’s] critics painted the Burrites as fops, and Burr himself was readily criticized for his ‘cunning’ and ‘treachery’, both those who admired him and those who detested him saw Burr’s erotic appeal in terms of his refined hypermasculinity—his ‘audacity’. Hamilton understood the attraction of Burr’s ‘audacity’, a quality that expressed an admirable boldness and spirit, as well as impertinence. In the election of 1800, Hamilton was consumed with a genuine fear that many men in the Senate would be drawn to his ‘dashing projecting spirit’. ‘Dashing’ implied an elegance of bodily deportment, a boldness of character, and an irresistible essence, which commanded respect and the approving gaze of male and female admirers.

I really tried to come up with further explanation for this one. I really did. But this quote means exactly what you think it means.

Alexander Hamilton on Paying for Louisiana

foundingfatherfest:

By the way a question here presents itself of some little moment: Mr. Jefferson in that part of his famous electioneering message, where he took so much pains to present a flattering state of the Treasury in so few words that every man could carry it in his noddle and repeat it at the poll, tells us, that “experience too so far authorises us to believe, if no extrordinary event supervenes, and the expences which will be actually incurred shall not be greater than was contemplated by Congress at their last session, that we shall not be disappointed in the expectations formed” that the debt would soon be paid, &c.&c.

But the first and only measure of the administration that has really been of any material service to the country (for they have hitherto gone on the strength of the provisions made by their predecessors) is really “an extraordinary event,” and calls for more money than they have got. According to Mr. Gallatin’s report, they had about 40,000 to spare for contingencies, and now the first “extraordinary event” that “supervenes” calls upon them for several millions. What a poor starvling system of administering a government! But how is the money to be had? Not by taxing luxury and wealth and whiskey, but by increasing the taxes on the necessaries of life. Let this be remembered.

-Alexander Hamilton

He’s got a point. Quite unfair that Hamilton was castigated for desiring taxes to pay off the debt, and wanting the debt to exist forever. Can’t have it both ways, guys.

“So why were you exiled?”

“‘Unspeakable crimes’.”

“Yes I know. But what kind of crimes? What kind specifically?” Alexander inched closer, wild-eyed and desperate.

“I cannot speak of them.” Aaron smiled. “I was told never to mention them again, on pain of death. And that is why I am here.” He raised a sleeved arm, draped in black cloth drawing in the sunlight of the island, and motioned to the setting around him.

“Surely you can tell me,” Alexander responded, “I too have been banished.”

Aaron flashed a dark smile over to his companion, watching the sunlight reflect like bright water off his ruffled copper hair, and remained stubbornly silent.

After a moment, he spoke, “You first.”

“They said I went insane.” He grabbed a handful of sand and quickly tossed it to the side. The ocean responded, splashed a small wave on the beach, and then retreated quickly.

“Oh?”

“Jefferson and his lot. I hate him. I hate them.”

Aaron rolled up a sleeve, exposing pale New England skin.

“And what was their reasoning?”

“That I was a monarchist, and too dangerous to be trusted with power. That I had dreams of making the wealthy wealthier and the poor poorer,” he brought a hand to his tired eyes, “in order to create an elite class that would rule, naturally.”

Was that your plan?”

“I don’t know.”

The dark man in his black robes began to sweat, the sun beating down on both of them. He smiled bitterly to himself.

“It wouldn’t matter, anyway, what your intentions were, would it?”

“It certainly wouldn’t,” Alexander answered, and moved closer.
